Domaine Monts de la Lune (DML), Mutwanga, North Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo: at the beginning there was a coffee renowned for its smoothness and that extra foamy espresso it would make. Three generations later and a dark chapter in the country’s history closed, the farm is thriving again with vanilla and cocoa, organically certified according to EU and US legislation and marketed as Fruits from the Mountains of the Moon™.

And there is more – DML supports the neighbouring Le Jardin Farmer Association and teaches the over 1000 members to produce vanilla, cocoa and spices according to the same organic standards. The partnership has become the lifeline for many families in an area of extreme rural poverty.
And there is more to come – while Le Jardin is preparing itself to fulfil FairTrade requirements, a number of selected farmers and DML are busy in adopting the even stricter Demeter organic standards on their farms.
